The term "psychosis" covers a range of symptoms that are associated with an altered perception of the environment. These can include hallucinations, delusions or even thought disorders. While in many situations no triggering causes can be found, psychoses can sometimes be triggered by psychoactive drugs such as cannabis, LSD or alcohol. In rare cases, psychoses arise as a result of diseases such as brain tumors, infections or epilepsy or occur as a side effect of a medication.
The treatment of a psychotic disorder depends on the cause of the symptoms and is directed at the individual needs of the sick person. It is important to involve the family and personal environment and to start psychotherapeutic and drug therapy as quickly as possible.
