Depression can manifest itself in many different ways, for example through feelings of sadness or inner emptiness. In addition to a strong lack of motivation, there is often a reduced feeling of joy. This makes even simple activities such as housework or shopping a burden. Sleep or concentration problems can also occur as a result. Common physical complaints mainly include headaches and muscle tension.
As with burnout, depression was previously trivialized, although it is one of the most common reasons for social isolation or suicide. Up to 5% of people living in Austria suffer from repeated depressive phases, and the number is increasing daily. Even if the exact cause is not yet fully understood, stress, traumatic experiences, physical illnesses and genetic factors are considered possible causes of depression. An imbalance of the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline plays an important role. As with other mental disorders, there are mild to severe forms. Therapy depends on the severity of the symptoms and usually includes a combination of medication and psychotherapy. Light therapy can also bring about improvement in seasonal depression. Fortunately, in recent years further progress has been made in the development of new forms of treatment for depression, so that therapy is possible even in severe cases.
