Sexual problems are more common than many people think. At a time when sexuality is often very present in the media and supposedly has a high priority, sexual difficulties often lead to shame and insecurity. Sexual therapy can help to overcome sexual problems and enable a fulfilling sex life.
Sex therapy can help with various problems, for example:
Erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation
Pain during intercourse or vaginismus
Orgasm problems or loss of libido
Sexual orientation or identity problems
Difficulties in the relationship or with sexual communication
If you or your partner suffer from one or more of these problems, sexual therapy can be useful.
Many people are hesitant to seek sexual therapy. They find it difficult to talk about their sexual problems and open up to a stranger. There is also a fear of possible stigmatization or judgment from the therapist. However, it is important to know that sex therapists have special training and experience in dealing with sexual problems for their work. They are obliged to maintain confidentiality and treat their patients with respect and empathy.
There are different approaches in sex therapy, depending on the problems. The most commonly used types of therapy include:
Behavioral and communication therapy: Here, patients learn to better understand their thoughts and feelings about sexuality and to communicate openly with their partner. Exercises to improve sexual functioning can also be part of the therapy.
Couple therapy: If there are problems in the couple's relationship, couple therapy can be useful. Here, solutions are worked out together and communication problems are solved.
Psychotherapy: Psychotherapy can help with deeper emotional problems, for example in connection with traumatic experiences or depression.
Sex therapy usually begins with a detailed initial consultation in which the patient's sexual problems are discussed. An individual therapy plan is then drawn up together with the therapist. The duration of therapy depends on various factors, such as the severity of the problems and the patient's cooperation. However, sex therapy usually lasts from a few months to a year.
